Character Education

The Templars Way -  Character Education

Education for character is integral to the work of Templars; we work relentlessly to provide the wider personal development opportunities necessary to accompany our academic curriculum in order to form well-educated, well-rounded pupils, ready for their next stage of education. We are ambitious, and proud to help drive equity and social mobility for our community. Our Mission, Vision and Values Statement exemplifies our ambitions for Every Child, Every Day, Every Chance.

Templars’ focus on restorative behaviour, our No-Outsiders statement, our chosen values of Honesty, Respect and Care, embedded curriculum principles of SMSC and British Values, our RSE programme and dedicated well-being lessons all contribute towards promoting good behaviour and positive character traits, preparing pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

Our choice of a knowledge-led curriculum was deliberate to address the self-efficacy needs of our pupils and built around a three-phase approach to learning:

  1. Knowledge acquisition – for pupils to experience the confidence from harvesting the substantive and disciplinary knowledge of a subject and most importantly the vocabulary associated with the subject
  2. Fluency – for pupils to develop self-confidence and be able to make points or argue constructively and clearly, listening attentively to the views of others with courtesy and speaking persuasively to an audience
  3. Depth – the opportunity for pupils to perform through assessment, through Be Our Guest Events – termly, planned events for a range of audiences and curriculum elements such as Knowledge Harvests.

The Templars Tailored Curriculum is completely bespoke and written by current staff led by current subject leaders. Belonging has been deliberately woven into all subjects and is referenced regularly. It has been carefully sequenced and logically organised in order to facilitate knowledge and vocab acquisition in the most efficient way. Several themes are purposefully built around pride in ourselves and our community, for example, ‘Coventry – Our City of Culture’ (Yr1) and ‘Belonging’ (Yr4).  Inclusion through pedagogy is central alongside refocussed and reorganised interventions in order that the most vulnerable learners are prioritised and that they experience the same sense of progress and growth in confidence.

A carefully planned assembly programme, subject lessons, dedicated character education lessons extolling the virtues of our chosen Templars Knights during Learning to Learn weeks, sports, additional performance events such as Templars Got Talent and Young Voices, challenging residentials and a huge range of free extra-curricular clubs all contribute to building the skills of resilience, empathy and employability. Our Feedback and Marking Policy is built around a belief in promoting motivation, effort and perseverance. Our Templars Tokens are awarded for exhibiting the virtues embedded in our values.

Cultural capital is the driving force behind our trips and visits programme, ensuring that all pupils are exposed to a wide range of British institutions. Through careful financial management, we are proud to be able to subsidise all of our trips and visits for pupils eligible for the Pupil Premium and no charge is made for any of our extra-curricular clubs, all of which take place at our school or for transport to competitions. All staff take a turn at running a club – there is a huge variety on offer across a very wide range of interest.

Assemblies include representations from the Girl Guides, Young Carers, the Scouting association, Triumph Amatuer Boxing Club and we take part in a range of national and international programmes – Anti-Bullying Week, International Road Safety Week, Children in Need, Macmillan Coffee Morning and the Coventry Peace Award to name but a few. In school we have a good number of opportunities for pupils which promote the value of volunteering and service to others including School Council, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, Yellow Caps, Reading Buddies, Lunchtime Buddies and Junior Leadership.
